12 persons feared dead as Fulani herdsmen sack five villages in Benue.

No fewer than 12 persons were feared dead, Friday morning, with several others sustaining varying degrees of injuries, after suspected Fulani herdsmen invaded and sacked five villages in Logo local government area of Benue state.  The lasted attack is coming on the heels of recent efforts by the state government and the leadership of the Mayyatti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, to find lasting solution to the protracted crisis.  Saturday Vanguard gathered from a reliable source in one of the affected communities that the marauders who razed over 150 huts, houses and barns also destroyed economic trees and farmlands in the besieged communities.  According to the source, the villages affected in the latest attack included Chembe, Tse-Mue, Ifer, Mgbakpa and Oragbai all in Ukemberagya council ward which was not less than four kilometres from Anyiin, headquarters of the local government council.  “They invaded our villages at about 5am, shooting sporadically for several hours and burning down our houses and huts without resistance.  “The situation on ground now is that over 12 persons have been killed, many yet unaccounted for while hundreds of people have been rendered homeless and many more fleeing their homes for fear of being killed.”  Speaking on the development, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Gabriel Suswam on Media and Public Affairs, Chief Joseph Anawah, who is an indigene of the area confirmed that the insurgents numbering about 100, used different routes to invade the affected villages.  Anawah said that the attackers caught up and killed some farmers in their farms, lamenting that some of the victims of Friday’s attack included homeless victims of last year’s communal crisis in the affected areas.  “Some of the victims of this attack were people who were rendered homeless as a result of last year’s attacks on their communities by the herdsmen but managed to return to their villages to cultivate their farmlands.”
